9 Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe and Comfortable During Hot Season

9 Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe and Comfortable During Hot Season

Bridget Kimpton January 19, 2024

As a dog owner, how can you make sure your dog won’t suffer from dehydration, sunburn, and overheating? How can we keep them fresh and cool during summer?

Summer season and other hot months usually have high temperatures that can be fatal for pets at home. But don’t worry because the following tips will help you understand how to keep your dog cozy and safe from the summer heat:

1. Avoid leaving your dog inside a vehicle. Even if you open your car windows, it’s never advisable to leave pets in your parked vehicle. Remember, in just 5 minutes, your parked car’s temperature can reach up to 160 degrees Celsius – a dangerous point for dogs.

2. Remove excess fur that can add to the body temperature of your dog by keeping them well-groomed. This will also help them feel light and comfy, especially when going outdoors where they will be exposed to summer heat.

3. Always keep your pet’s bed clean and cool. Dogs sleep better if they are provided with a cooling pad. Make sure to wash their bed regularly to remove bugs and dirt which can make them allergic.

4. Buy sunscreen for dogs. In case you are not aware, your pet can also get sunburnt when exposed to extreme heat. The best way to avoid sunburn is to apply a generous amount of dog-friendly sunscreen on their ears, nose, belly, and other skin areas not protected by their coat.

5. Keep your fur baby hydrated all day. Make sure they can easily access their water bowl at home; when outdoors, remember to keep a bottle of drinking water handy in case your dog gets thirsty. Summer heat can easily dehydrate animals and make them feel lethargic. If they show signs of dehydration, take them immediately to the clinic.

6. Never let your doggo walk on hot pavements or any concrete flooring under the sun. Dogs’ paws are sensitive – hot pavements could burn your dog’s paws, which could lead to discomfort and pain. You don’t want to make your pet feel uncomfortable while walking in the neighborhood.

7. If you want to walk your dog, choose a grassy area with cool shades. This will allow them to get some fresh air while walking around. Don’t forget to bring their favorite toy for some playtime.

8. Cooling vests, collars, bandannas are worthy investments when it comes to keeping your beloved pet safe when going outside during a sunny day.

9. When going out with the family for summer outings in the lake or beach, dogs also need life jackets to avoid drowning. This is particularly important if you know your dog can be nervous when they see water.

Before you get excited for summer, it also pays off to consider the needs of your pet dogs. These helpful tips are only some of the reminders you need to consider during hot months. If your dog is well taken care of, it will save you time and money while allowing you to enjoy your leisure.
