The officers of the Tybee Island Police Department, in cooperation with the Humane Society of Greater Savannah, arranged for numerous shelter dogs to spend a day as K9s. Their primary objective was to increase awareness about animal adoption. By doing so, they helped a large number of pets find new homes within a few months.
A good example is Rocky, a rescue dog from Georgi. He was not a police dog, but the policemen were impressed by his behavior. They invited him to join the police force full-time since they adored him.
Dogs from the program are often adopted by members of the community who encounter them during community patrol.
Rocky had a different situation. Once he arrived at the police station, the policemen realized he belonged to be with them.
Rocky established an instant rapport with everyone in the department. As soon as he reached the station, he befriended the cops and boosted everyone’s spirits.
Austin, a worker at the shelter, also recognized that Rocky impressed the officers, so she wasn’t shocked when they informed her that they wanted to adopt him.
As Rocky has not been trained as a police dog, he has yet to accompany officers on calls. Currently, his primary responsibility is to provide emotional support to his coworkers and assist them in coping with the daily stress of their work. Rocky, who wears his badge while meeting people on patrol, also functions as a liaison officer for the community.
2020 was extremely stressful for everyone, but most especially for first responders and law enforcement officers. Rocky, who resides at the station full-time, calms his colleagues and assists them through their hard days at work.
Rocky is extremely valuable to the officers of the Tybee Island Police Department. By playing with him and scratching his head and abdomen, the cops are able to take a break from their hectic work.
