Dog Trapped In Mudflats Was Rescued Using An Unorthodox Rescue Method Involving A Drone And A Tasty Sausage

Dog Trapped In Mudflats Was Rescued Using An Unorthodox Rescue Method Involving A Drone And A Tasty Sausage

Bridget Kimpton May 12, 2024

On January 13, 2022, a Jack Russell-Whippet named Millie went missing. She escaped her owner’s lead while walking in the streets of Hampshire, England. She slipped from her collar and ran away.
Her worried owner is Emma Oakes, who immediately contacted Denmead Drone Search and Rescue (DDSR), a volunteer rescue organization that helps locate missing pets through the help of cameras and drones. The rescue group went to work right away, and a few hours into the search, they successfully located Millie, who ended up stranded on dangerous mudflats.

There was the threat of a rising tide, and it was risky to kayak to the dog’s location. The DDSR did everything they could to bring her to safer grounds with minimal risk. But the canine wouldn’t cooperate since she refused to cross the muddy areas and opted to stay on the grassy parts.

Two days into the search, one of the drone pilots proposed an idea. When they learned about Millie’s love for sausages, the DDSR cooked and used some as bait. They tied it with bootlaces linked to the drone before allowing it to hover above Millie’s location. Assuming that Millie is also very hungry, it would be hard for her to resist the delicious banger.
Thankfully, the unorthodox idea turned out to be a success. Following the dangling sausage, Millie took the bait, inevitably luring her away from the rising tidal waters and onto safer ground.
Later that day, the canine was spotted at Havant. Emma’s father, Tony, and his pet Border Collie, Jasper, searched for Millie this time. When the latter saw the two familiar faces, she rushed towards them and leaped into Tony’s arms.

Emma was relieved when she got the phone call from her father and learned that Millie was now safe. She was thrilled to have her home again.
Millie, on the other hand, is a little skittish to anyone who approaches her. She seemed traumatized from the entire experience. Still, what matters is that she is now safe, thanks to her incredible rescuers and their innovative idea to save one family’s beloved dog.
