Just recently, the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA), a non-profit animal welfare organization, posted a story about a pit bull terrier named Aspen. Aspen was rescued by the BC SPCA in an abandoned RV that was so dark and filled with garbage and feces that he had almost no place to lie down at all.
He was so lethargic and it was also clear that he had been without food or even just water for days. He was so emaciated that his ribs, spine, and hip bones already protruded from his skin. And when he was finally let out of the RV, he went straight to licking ice and eating snow to hydrate.
Aspen was definitely in critical distress and was immediately transported to the vet’s emergency clinic to get checked. His rescuers weren’t sure that he would make it through the night but Aspen had an incredible spirit. And he did fight and live despite the horrendous condition he was in.
After he was stabilized, the BC SPCA brought him into the shelter and worked to find a foster family who was experienced in working with dogs like him who were rescued in difficult situations. Luckily, they immediately found someone who would love to open their home to Aspen.
Aspen met his foster family and at first, he was definitely sad and heartbroken though he tried to still cautiously interact with them. He went through the refeeding program where he was on a strict schedule of meals every six hours and vitamins and mineral supplements. And along every step, his foster family made him feel loved.
And with that, Aspen gained a healthy ten kilograms and soon enough, he opened up to his foster family and lovingly received all the pets and cuddling he could get.
