From The Slaughter Farm To A Loving Home, Camo Came A Long Way But It’s All Worth It

From The Slaughter Farm To A Loving Home, Camo Came A Long Way But It’s All Worth It

Bridget Kimpton January 21, 2024

Frightened and always terrified – that’s how Camo was when he was first brought home by the Markley spouses.  He will play and run freely on their fenced yard but will head towards the house petrified when he hears something loud or eccentric.

Camo, a Maltese mix, is a rescue dog and how he reacts to strange things or sounds around him is no surprise considering what he has been through,

The little pooch was discarded by his first owner in a dog farm in Seoul, South Korea to be butchered for his meat.  While Camo waits for slaughter, he lived a hopeless life.

He was kept in a nasty cage and is usually left with no clean drinking water or food. His supposedly white fur became muddy, matted, and obscured with feces.  Because of fear, Camo cowered behind his cage.

Mid of last year, at last, help came.  Camo, along with other 54 dogs at the ‘farm’ had hopes of finding better lives.

An old farmer, who had farmed dogs in 20 years, wrote to Humane Society International and asked for help to finally cease down the farm’s operation.

“Apparently, the owner had had a change of heart and couldn’t send dogs to slaughter anymore”, said HSI Director of International Media, Wendy Higgins.  He also can no longer make himself consume dog meat, added Higgins.

When rescuers arrived at the farm, Camo was suspicious.  He snarled and growled when he was removed from the cage.  He, however, also appeared desperate for human connection.

Adam Parascandola, Animal Protection and Crisis Response unit’s senior director at HSI, said in an interview with The Dodo that Camo is just confuse of his situation but not totally detached or distant.

Camo was moved to the U.S and brought to Roff Rescue in Pennsylvania where he was taken cared of and fostered by a groomer.

When Camo was finally ready to be adopted, Sally Markley and her husband brought him home along with another dog, Kasey, a Shih Tzu, which friendship became an important part of Camo’s rehabilitation.

Although Camo still has a long way to go through to finally forget his dark past, his furparents are doing anything that they could to make sure that he lives a comfortable life.
