Dogs are more than just pets. They’re very loyal, great friends, and they will protect their family even if it means risking their lives.
We hear and see a lot of stories about dogs saving their owners. However, Rex, a two-year-old German Shepherd, is a real hero for his family.
Rex’s owner, Javier Mercado was alone at home with Rex. At around noon, two individuals forced their way in Javier’s house by smashing a glass door. Scared for his life, Javier hid in a closet in a bedroom and called 911 for help.
Rex, a usually gentle dog, instinctively ran downstairs to protect Javier. He confronted the robbers but was repeatedly beaten by the robbers until he was bloody. Rex retreated upstairs while the burglars were ransacking the house downstairs.
Eventually, the two burglars made their way upstairs and entered the room where Javier was hiding. Rex lunged at the two robbers to protect Javier. The robbers, who were armed with a gun, shot Rex three times, which hit him on his knee, leg, and neck.
The police eventually arrived, and the sirens scared the two unidentified men off the property. The heroic actions of Rex protected Javier and bought time until the police arrived.
Rex was rushed to hospital where he went through surgery to take bullet fragments out of his body and get treatment for his injuries. Although severely injured, Rex pulled through and made a full recovery.
Rex’s heroic actions became known all over the country, and the community wanted to do something to help. Eventually, people started donating money for the family to help pay for Rex’s medical bills and therapy. Here’s a video below describing how Rex protected Javier. Thanks to him, the burglars didn’t find Javier, which resulted in saving his life. Rex since made a full recovery and is now back home with his grateful family.
