Rescue Dog Helps Save Koalas From Bushfires In Australia

Rescue Dog Helps Save Koalas From Bushfires In Australia

Bridget Kimpton December 21, 2019

Australia Bushfires Hero

Owning a dog isn’t a simple walk in the park. There is an adjustment period that both of you will go through to become more comfortable with each other. But for some, taking that time and patience to get to know their new pet isn’t for them.

This is the situation that Bear, a Border Collie – Collie mix, found himself in when he was put back up for adoption by the family that initially took him in. Lucky for him, the team at Detection Dogs For Conservation decided to take him in and train him to help save others.

A special talent

In his new home, Bear was given the opportunity to be trained to help search and rescue injured or sick wildlife to help with the organization’s research and conservation initiatives. However, the recent Australia bushfires that spread along the Sunshine Coast and New South Wales, Queensland in Australia, had made Bear’s talents in wildlife detection even more vital for emergency animal rescue missions.

The bushfires that damaged at least seven hundred and fifty homes also destroyed millions of acres of bush and farmland, making it a hazardous environment for its wildlife, including the local Koala population. Bear, according to his handlers, is one of the only dogs in the world that can track Koalas just through the scent of their fur. Because of this, his extraordinary talents were a massive help in getting these furry creatures to safety.

On a mission

Bear has already been able to track down dozens of Koalas in need of help for research purposes. He has now been tasked to search the damaged areas in hopes of finding any marsupials left stranded there. The area damaged by the flames is one of the major habitats of these furry animals, and they hope that they could find and help them with the help of this talented dog.
