We rarely get the opportunity to become a hero, but for a Massachusetts Amazon driver, his time to become one was quite literally a fence away. When John Cassabria stopped at one house during a routine delivery, he never knew he was just in time to save another life—a dog’s life.
Looking over the backyard fence of the house, Cassabria noticed something bobbing in the pool. According to his interview with WBZ-TV, Cassabria could only make out what was like a snout in the water.
After realizing it was a dog drowning, he leaped into action, and before he knew it, he was over the fence and in the water with the helpless dog. Cassabria didn’t think twice when he jumped in the pool that he did not even think of taking off his clothes before jumping in. He had everything in his pocket, including his wallet and his phone—all he thought of was saving the dog.
As it turned out, 14-year-old senior Husky, Luka, fell into the backyard pool when his owner, Julie Caldwell, was out on vacation. It is most likely that a bone had gotten caught in the pool’s vacuum, which piqued Luka’s interest.
Caldwell is thankful that Cassabria was there at that time, as she mentioned that Luka would have had difficulty getting out of the pool by himself as he had problems with is hind legs due to his age. Caldwell was notified of the incident when she was contacted by animal control.
After saving the drowning dog, Cassabria stayed with Luka for an hour and a half for the scheduled sitter to arrive. Caldwell couldn’t thank Cassabria enough for saving her beloved dog, and so she sent a letter to the CEO of Amazon to express her gratitude for their heroic employee.
While Caldwell is yet to hear from Amazon, she is hopeful that John Cassabria will get recognition for his heroic actions.
