Animal shelter employees and volunteers do not only watch over the facility, but they also make sure that these lovely creatures are well attended to so they can all be adopted. Most of these people would say that it is the least they could do, and when it happens, they feel like they’ve fulfilled their life’s purpose.
However, Maisie Green, an 89-year-old woman, stood out from all the volunteers at a shelter in the United Kingdom. She spends most of her time knitting blankets to keep the dogs warm during winter.
Maisie started creating these blankets after a program called Dogs Trust invited volunteers to make coats and blankets for some shelter dogs. The clothing will then be distributed to nearby animal centers before the Christmas season. Of course, being an expert in the said craft, the nice woman heeded the call and started sewing blankets.
“I love knitting, but I love dogs even more. It was a chance for me to do what I love for those I love. It’s amazing, and I enjoy every bit of it,” says Maisie. “A blankie takes three days to be finished, and dog coats take about a day or two. I love that it keeps me busy,” she adds.
Maisie has been knitting blankets for dogs since 2017, and she doesn’t plan to stop. She has also influenced some of her family members to do the same, which produced more coats and helped more dogs.
These blankets are not only for fashion, but it helps the dogs regulate their temperature and keeps them warm and cozy. When dogs are comfortable, it helps their overall well being and makes them a better candidate for adoption.
Aside from spending her time making blankets, Maisie also sets a schedule to visit local shelters to check the out the pups. She may not be able to adopt all of them, but she does her best to give them the best life while in the shelter, at least.
