Veterinarian Adopts Rescued Sick Pitbull

Veterinarian Adopts Rescued Sick Pitbull

Bridget Kimpton August 16, 2020

Veterinarians diagnose and research medical problems of pets and other animals. Their love for animals sometimes leads to unexpected adoptions.

Meeting Graycie

Graycie was a grey coated Pitbull that was found in the middle of the streets. Animal control picked her up and instantly took her to a local clinic.

Dr. Andy Mathis was the vet on call when Graycie arrived at the clinic. The dog was extremely malnourished and very sick. She was so scared of people and would back away when someone would approach her.

Once Graycie was in her kennel, Dr. Andy brought her some food. The dog immediately hid in the corner once she saw the vet approaching.

Dr. Andy was going to leave when he realized that Gracie was most likely to eat if she was comfortable. Gracie just stood and watched as the vet slowly entered the kennel and sat down.

The vet hand-fed Graycie and encouraged her to eat. Cautiously, Graycie ate out of Dr. Andy’s hands then started to eat by herself. After a few moments, she went back to her corner.

After a few minutes of watching Dr. Andy, Graycie stood up and finished what was left in her bowl. It became evident that the dog started to trust the vet.

New beginnings

Five days later, Gracie was comfortable enough to eat by herself. Her appetite was tremendous, and she quickly gained a pound and a half. Graycie was still a bit scared of people but slowly started to play with the other dogs.

Dr. Andy’s original plan was to get Graycie healthy and then find the perfect home for her. But things didn’t go as he planned. Dr. Andy couldn’t let the dog go. He and Graycie had already formed a strong bond, so he decided to adopt her.
