Woman In Wheelchair Finishes Graduate School And Her Service Dog Gets Honorary Diploma Too!

Woman In Wheelchair Finishes Graduate School And Her Service Dog Gets Honorary Diploma Too!

Bridget Kimpton July 11, 2020

Brittany Hawley couldn’t imagine surviving graduate school without her service dog, GRIFFIN. So when it was time for the graduation ceremonies, GRIFFIN went on stage with her. But the highlight of the event was GRIFFIN receiving his own honorary diploma.

Brittany and GRIFFIN

Brittany’s academic life has been demanding, but her service dog, GRIFFIN (yes, the dog’s name is spelled in all capital letters), made it so much easier for her. Brittany took up a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy at Clarkson University in New York. And every day of her life at home and school, GRIFFIN was always there for her.

Brittany needs GRIFFIN because she suffers from complex regional pain syndrome since she was 16 years old. She suffers intense pain in her body, and her legs would twitch involuntarily. Brittany needs to use a wheelchair to get around.

Despite her condition, Brittany did not lose heart. She knew she’d need some help, though, especially when she went to college. That was when her family decided to get her a service dog, and GRIFFIN came into her life. Interestingly, GRIFFIN was approved to become her service dog by Paws4People the very same day she had an interview with Clarkson University.

GRIFFIN’s achievement

GRIFFIN does a lot of things for Britanny. He picks things up, turns the lights on or off, and opens the doors for her. Brittany also turns to GRIFFIN whenever she feels down or sad. Her mood lightens up just by petting GRIFFIN’s soft fur.

Suffice to say, GRIFFIN helped Brittany finish her graduate studies. And the school knew how important GRIFFIN was to Brittany’s academic success. So Clarkson University thought it’s only right to recognize GRIFFIN’s hard work by awarding him an honorary diploma during Brittany’s graduation.

GRIFFIN proudly received his diploma. Brittany and her family were all beaming with pride as they watched GRIFFIN shine on stage. Indeed, it was a moment worth remembering. Your recognition is well-deserved, GRIFFIN!
